A dark, yet comical and heart-warming episode in the story of Andurile and her new path.

– Chained –

STARTING SCENE:

* A vampire in chains following a hunter dressed in black. The woman keeps her head down, almost in tears. They are walking on a road leading through the country, passing by a forest. *

Andurile dragged in chains. She was a prisoner to a merciful monster hunter.

SCENE:

Kareem: There are worse fates, than being sentenced to be my wife. Your punishment to fulfil my every wishes… Well it does not seem like eternal torment.

Andurile: Then… In your opinion, what would be so grim to be a fate? Serving YOU! A human! ME a vampire!? It is shameful! At least why couldn’t you grant me an honest death?

Kareem: I honestly cannot understand you. I just saved your life… How ungrateful you vampires can be… Besides, despite the popular belief that we are mindless butchers, we monster hunters are not heartless and in cases where the so-called “monster” can be reasoned with, we tend to negotiate instead.

Andurile: I did not need your help, nor you pity…

Kareem: You did seem like a maiden in distress to me. But, anyways, would it be better to be burned alive at the stakes? I do not think so.

* They were walking silently for a while. *

However, eventually humans tire. They need rest. So Kareem stopped to make a camp. Gathered firewood. He chained Andurile to a tree with his enchanted chain. Just left her there, if it was nothing. He trusted the magical metal that kept the vampire at bay, and ventured into the forest without fearing she would escape.

I could not escape and that magical chain made me weak, unable to cast my own magic. Even the simplest one…

* Upon returning, the hunter pulled out his knife and from his backpack, and then he started to put meal in front of himself. Then when everything was set, he started to have dinner. *

Kareem: Anyways, you know my name, but did not answer to me before. Maybe you will now. How do they call you my dear wife?

Andurile hesitated, but this time, she felt some kind of urge to answer. She had nothing to lose with it. At first she was thinking about a fake name, but then she gave in…

Andurile: They call me… Andurile… Andurile la’Hessen.

Kareem: La’Hessen you say? Hmm. In your elven tongue it means, from Hessen… Right?

Andurile: Yes… You are right. It is my birth place. The village I hail from.

Kareem: Hessen… I didn’t hear about it before. Is it far? Because I travelled around elven lands for some time and I did not run into any town named like this…

Andurile: It is… Indeed, it is far. Not just in distance, but in time. I do not know if it is still there at all… It might be non-existent now…

Kareem: I see… I am sorry…

* A little silent followed. The hunter tried to avoid the eyes of the vampiress, and so did she with his. *

Andurile felt sad about this thought. She had lost trace of her home a very long time ago…

Kareem: Are you hungry? Would you like a slice from my ham? Or perhaps from the cheese?

Andurile: I would be grateful for some… yes…

* Kareem hands some of his meal to her. His hands were steady. *

Kareem did not even had the slightest fear in him. He just handed over the food to her, like she was and ol’ pal of his. Though Andurile could rip off his arm easily, still… But something stopped her…

* Andurile starts to eat hastily. *

Andurile: Thank you! Thank you very much…

Kareem: Do not mention it… I gave it with kindness…

* They continued to eat together. *

After Kareem finished his dinner, he prepared for a sleep. Andurile still had some cheese to munch on. And did just that, with a little smile on her face.

Kareem: I know, you will not sleep, so would you be kind and keep a watch? I wish you good night!

So it was, Kareem fell asleep. Yet something in Andurile kept her from drinking from his blood, or to kill him. Kareem literally lay in front of her.

Something moved in me. Something kept me from hurting him. Like a promise I made. But I cannot say for sure. This was the feeling of change perhaps…

* Morning came. *

Kareem: Good morning my dear wife. How are you today?

* Andurile raised her eyebrows, but answered politely. *

Andurile: I am fine, thank you for asking. And thou art?

Kareem: I slept well. We shall get going soon.

* Kareem packed up his camp. They slowly got on the road again. *

* After some hours of walking Kareem broke the silence. *

Kareem: I knew I could trust you. You may not see it that way, but when I saw you in those cages, I saw something else, not a monster like most of the people. As you were sitting there, wounded, I saw a bird, which just needs some nursing. I saw something good in you… And I was not mistaken, you had your chance, many times… You could have killed me and just got on your way. But you did not. You have some goodness in you. Do not let others tell you otherwise.

Andurile: So you were prepared for the worst all along? You surprised me… I guess I owe you now… Thank you…

Kareem: You are most welcome… I redeemed you, not to mock you, but to help you…

* They were walking for some hours again. The forest was left far behind them, but they kept walking until they were in the middle of a field. *

When Kareem stopped Andurile still had some doubts, she could not know what to think or what to make of his actions.

Kareem: I suppose, we are far enough away from any town.

* Kareem pulled out a key and opened the shackles on her hands. *

Kareem: You are free now. So… go… But use this freedom well this time.

This was her last chance… Some might call it as a turning point. For her to change.

Andurile: Thank you… I owe you…

Kareem: There is one way how you could repay to me… Just try to be the very person I saw in your eyes. Nothing more, nothing less.

Andurile: I think this is my last chance… Stay safe hunter, may we not meet again…

* She turned into a bat and flew off. *

Kareem: Stay safe… Stay safe Andurile…

O, where did she come from? The first part from the origin story of Andurile. A Village to Remember. Covering the feeling of home and the memory of one's youth.

– A Village to Remember –

STARTING SCENE:

* The sun was high in the
sky… A colourful village full of joy and life. *

PROLOUGE:

A valley of
joy and happiness. It was truly enchanted, between snowy peaks there laid a
flourishing green valley. And in there between the hiding and protecting circle
of trees was a village, Hessen…

* The
market of the village was busy and loud, children were playing all around and
maidens chatted. All were happy… *

I remember
it all. I used to play with my fellow lasses; we roamed the forests and the
hills and vales… No one could have been happier than I was back then. Both my
father and my mother were simple folk; I grew up on fairy tales and books. I
liked the tales of elven knights saving imprisoned princesses and stories of
majestic and mythical sorceresses; I envied their powers and beauty… I wanted
to study, to go to the great city of the realm, the capital of the Elven
Kingdom, the Crystal City… But fate was cruel to me.

ACT I,
SCENE I.:

* Andurile
is helping her mother with the hose chores. She sweeps the floor and does the
washing while her mother is cooking. *

We were
simple folk, with simple traditions and customs. I could not even dream of such
things, because it would never happen. I was not the most beautiful lass nor
the most popular in the village, I used to keep to my books, I liked to be
alone walking in the green forest. I liked to bath in sunlight. I always helped
my parents, did honourable work…

She was special in her way, other may did not see it
until it was too late.

ACT I,
SCENE II.:

* The whole
forest baths in light. Andurile is enjoying her time there. Walking carelessly.
*

I loved the
life I lived. I loved the little village in the green valley between snowy
mountains.

On one very
nice day I went out to pick some herbs and flowers. I wanted to help our
herbalist at the time, wanted to study a bit. It was a good day.

* Andurile
is picking up blue and white mushrooms, avoiding to touch any of the green and
red ones. Then moves toward other herbs and bushes. *

She was sedulous. Always wanted to help. She was
clever and shy. But most importantly, happy.

ACT II,
SCENE I.:

* We start
in Andurile’s little bedroom, she is sitting in front of the mirror. *

I was
looking at myself. Combing my hair. I was a simple lass. I could not think
highly of myself, could not see the beauty…

She had long reddish brown hair, reaching the middle
of her back. Her eyes like crystal lakes, as blue as the sky above us. She was
slim and had all elements to be considered beautiful. But she could not see
herself that way, could not think about this. She thought less about herself
than what was in her…

I was
nearing an age where elves chose their mates, a simple custom, but I custom I
was not found of. I could not see myself beautiful and so I thought why anyone
else would choose me. So I ran away.

ACT II,
SCENE II.:

* During
the cover of the night a young lass is running through the forest. *

I thought I
can escape my fate. But I made a mistake… A grim one at that.

* A creek
was crossing the forest. The moonlight shined on the wet pebbles. It was not
wide or deep, but its water was fresh and icy cold. *

I slipped
and fell into the little creek, hit my head on one of the stones, losing my
consciousness.

* Morning
came, and she just laid there. Villagers had come to look for her. *

She was as cold as death when the villagers found her.
Almost lost the grip of life. But her spirit was strong.

They saved
me that day, but soon, I fell ill.

ACT II,
SCENE III.:

* The scene
opens at the little room, Andurile is lying in her bed, her mother is holding a
wet cloth to her head. *

I had
fever. My mother tried to help me, they asked the herbalist to mix potions for
me, to cure me, but was in vain. It seemed I will never recover.

She was at the edge of death and life. A slim blade,
trying to find balance…

I remember
my mother crying, also my father whom I have never seen crying before…

Mother: Oh!
My sweet child… Why is this happening to us? Just recover…

Father:
There is no way to lose our little flower… Not like this…

At that
moment memories of my childhood, came to me, I saw the colourful village, the
joy of children. I heard they titter. I saw a busy market, full of people,
happy lads and young maidens. I heard the chirping of birds, the buzzing of
bees. The life in the forever green forest. The smiles of the flowers, the
smell of the trees. The song of birds and little spirits between the leaves. I
was jumping and running in the forest, animals were around me. Then I realised
I am sleeping, it could not have been reality ever again.

EPILOUGE:

* The dark
sheet of darkness wrapped the village like a blanket. *

Then the
monster came… A vampire, as ancient as time itself.

I felt fear
running along my spine, fear like no other. For reasons I know not he spared
me. He cured me and gave me a gift. With it came power and a chance. But it was
a curse as well…

– Not a Fairy Tale –

STARTING SCENE:

* The moon was full
at that night. Lunar light covered the city. *

SCENE:

Between the roofs of the city a shadow lurks.

* A lovely pair is
walking down in a dark alley. The lovers hold each other’s hand; the woman
nestles up to the man. They are walking slowly down into the night. *

A shadow was watching them. Lovers, those whom are destined to live
happily ever after. The woman seemed innocent, wearing a white dress.

* The monster jumps.
*

Then the shadow jumps on them from above. It grabs the man and bites
into his neck sucking out life itself. The woman could not scream in her
terror, she could not take out what monster could lurk in the dark. She tried
to flee, but slipped. Terrified she just closed her eyes waiting for the end…

* The monster hesitates. Just looking at the clean
white dress. *

Nothing happened. Suddenly the shadow left. Upon seeing the innocent
woman in her white dress, the monster saw something in her what was lost to it
ages ago… She was left untouched, but horror made a nest inside her. Her
husband lay there lifeless, with eyes of glass, even his soul was taken.

Andurile: But my tale
does not begin here. I was once an innocent lass, just like that woman in her
white dress… A very long time ago in a distant land… But that was taken away.

ENDING SCENE:

* Andurile is
standing atop the rooftop. Watching the dark city. *

She was looking at her pray, the unknowing and peaceful silent city.
Where people slept their sweet dreams. This was one of her darker days, but
even that did not last forever.
